Lisa Gold
music history and literature
Lisa Gold has been studying, performing, and teaching Balinese and Javanese music since the 1970's, and has conducted extensive field research in Bali and Java. She holds a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from the University of California, Berkeley, with a specialization in Balinese music in ritual, theater, and shadow puppetry and a secondary specialization in folk music of the British Isles. Other research interests include musical meaning, oral performance, and music and spatial orientation. She is a performing member of the Bay Area's Gamelan Sekar Jaya, Gamelan Sari Raras, and Shadowlight, and has directed and performed in concerts of Lou Harrison's music for gamelan. She has performed extensively in the U.S. and in Bali. Dr. Gold is the author of the Bali article in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and the book Music in Bali: Experiencing Music, Expressing Culture, in the Oxford University Press Global Music Series (2005). She has taught at the University of California, Berkeley, Mills College, Colorado College, San Jose State University, San Francisco State University, the Jerusalem Music Center, and has been on the collegiate faculty at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music since 2004.
